Non-Alcoholic
~By Shimegami-chan
Shounen ai!

Duo poured himself a glass of vodka and tested it. "Man, Quatre, I never thought one of my parties could ever top yours!"

Quatre smiled and sipped at his non-alcoholic champagne. "You always did know how to throw a party, Duo!"

"I didn't mean it." Duo grinned. "But thanks for the compliment."

Wufei strolled by, drinking wine. "Maxwell! Looks like everything's going well ne?"

"Hai!" Duo beamed and uncapped another bottle of liquor. Heero swirled around a wine glass with red liquid in the bottom. "More?" Duo asked, eyeing the near-empty goblet.

"No thanks," Heero said quietly. Duo shrugged and topped his own off before heading upstairs behind Quatre.

Heero nervously fixed himself a glass of Coke, alcohol-free. God only knows what I might say if I got drunk tonight....

Many friends had been invited to the New Year's party at Duo's place, and by 11:45 most of them--including Duo himself--were quite tipsy. The braided American had just started on his seventh glass of the night as Heero tempted himself with the non-alcoholic stuff Quatre had provided. Heero supposed he could let himself go, just this once, but seeing Duo for the first time in such a long time had stopped him...the young Deathscythe pilot was even more attractive than he had been when Heero had last seen him, nearly a year ago, and Heero knew he wouldn't be able to control himself once he got enough drinks under his belt.

Of course, he couldn't tell Duo or the others that. He had quietly refilled his glass with soda after pouring the alcohol back into the bottle and rejoined his friends upstairs. They were killing time, watching a movie.until midnight, and when Heero reentered Duo happily seated himself in Heero's lap and giggled. "Hihi Hee-chan!"

"Hello." Heero managed a smile and allowed the American to sit on him. Duo laughed in glee and sucked back the rest of his wine.

"Oi, Hee-chan! Don't you just love New Year's!? I do!" Duo hiccupted and placed his glass on the floor before snuggling closer to Heero. The Japanese pilot gasped in surprise and stiffened.

"Hai, Duo. New Year's is...fun." Heero circled his lean arms around Duo's waist and held the other boy snugly. What did it matter? Duo wouldn't remember, and everyone else thought Heero was drunk anyway...Heero smiled a bit and stared off into space.

Quatre sipped his beverage thoughtfully and pulled closer to Trowa, who was sitting beside him on the couch.

Duo offered Heero another blushing smile and leaned his head against the Japanese boy's. "Hee-chan..." he whispered, "Did you miss me?"

"H-hai...." Heero sipped the glass of Coke and grinned at Duo. "I did...."

"Mmmmm." Duo's chestnut braid fell tantalizingly in Heero's lap. "I missed you too...."

He stirs up such conflicting feelings in me, Heero reflected. But Duo was....Duo was...well....wasn't he?

"Duo, where's Hilde tonight?" Heero asked softly.

"Left a few months back," the American slurred. "I'm doin' okay on m'own."

"Left?" The surprised Heero tightened his grip on Duo. She never deserved you. "I'm sorry."

"I'm not." Duo traced his finger tantalizingly around on Heero's chest.

Relax, Yuy. He's loaded drunk, you can't take him seriously. But Heero's heart jumped at the thought that Duo was glad to have broken it off with Hilde, was glad to be in Heero's arms and running his warm fingers up and down Heero's body. In the morning, he'll wonder what he was thinking.

Won't he?

"You don't...mind, do you?"

"Mind what?" Heero focused on the boy in his lap.

"I....that is, you don't mind me." Duo's violet eyes were downcast.

The puzzled Heero tipped his chin up. "Why would I mind?"

"I don't know...but y'know, Mr. I'm-The-Perfect-Soldier Yuy might...y'know?"

"I don't catch your meaning."

Duo's words seemed to echo Heero's own thoughts. "In the morning, you might mind this very much. Me sitting here...saying these things..."

"No, Duo..." Heero soothed. "I'm perfectly rational right now. I've never felt more so in my life."

"Sure. You seem more open than usual...Hee-chan..."

"I've changed, I'd like to think...." Heero cradled Duo's body against his. "I've changed a lot. Duo...." Damn damn don't tell him you don't know what he'll-- "Ano...I've been wanting to tell you this for a while now..."

Yuy...what are you THINKING!?!?!?

"What?" Duo asked, his indigo eyes clear.

"I...kind of...missed you. A lot."

Good save.

"Really?" Duo smiled happily.

"Yeah. I...kind of like you....as more than a friend."

BAD! Nonononononono!

Duo giggled drunkenly and leaned even furthur into Heero. "Waiii! I...like you too! Even if you're drunk and going to break my heart in the morning!"

"Same to you....my Duo...."

There. You said it. Are you happy?

"M'glad I could spend my New Year's with you. And speaking of New Year's..." Quatre had stood and moved to turn on the TV while Wufei passed out champagne and glasses. "it's 11:55....already..."

Heero shifted a bit under Duo's weight, still a little stunned from the bombshell that had been dropped on him. Duo liked him too? Since when? Or was it because Duo was drunk? Heero wasn't too sure how much alcohol Duo had had at the celebration, just that he was almost never seen without a glass of it in his hand. Heero suddenly found a similar glass in his own hand, and Wufei was busily topping it off with the clear liquid. "You look pretty comfortable there, Yuy." The Chinese boy winked and moved on to pour Trowa a drink. Heero stared curiously after the Shenlong pilot.

They're all completely gone....except Quatre.... It didn't really matter if they saw him holding Duo or not.

"Duo...." he whispered. "I...I'm glad...that you're....by yourself. I mean, not that you're...but...without Hilde."

"Jealous?" Duo murmured.

"Yeah," Heero breathed.

Duo started a little in his arms. "What happened to the Peacecraft?"

We both knew that wasn't going to work out," Heero said solemnly.

"Sorry."

"You certainly don't need to be."

Silence took them both for a few minutes before Quatre pointed eagerly at the TV screen. "Countdown's starting!"

Duo turned his attention to the announcer and the huge digital clock in the background. Together the room full of people chanted along with the man--"Ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, THREE, TWO, ONE, ZERO!"

"Happy New Year!" Wufei cried, his face more than a little reddened by the alcohol.

Quatre, now serving as the host of the party, threw streamers around and leaned forward to kiss Trowa. Sally sauntered over to Wufei. "You're supposed to kiss someone, or you'll have bad luck!" She planted a kiss directly on the Chinese pilot's lips, and the young man did not protest.

"Why not?" Heero took Duo's chin tenderly in his fingers and drew him into a deep kiss that the Deathscythe pilot eagerly returned. The two boys were locked together for what seemed like eternity, hands wandering, never breaking the sudden embrace. The room suddenly seemed to go silent for Heero, all the people disappearing. So this is what it's like. God...I'm glad I'm going to remember this...

Duo tasted like....raspberry wine, he decided. He was become fairly intoxicated with just the taste of Duo's lips, never mind the alcohol on his breath. Heero wanted to stay there forever, but Duo broke the kiss to come up for air.

It was 12:02.

Quatre had removed the wine glass from Heero's drooping fingers at some point and Heero was glad he wouldn't have to let go of Duo to dispose of it. The American leaned once more against Heero's solid chest and breathed deeply. "Thank you."

"The pleasure was all mine." Heero's colbalt eyes were half-closed already as he played with the end of Duo's long chestnut braid. The rest of the room had yet to materialize around him, he was so intent on the sweet smell of Duo and the warmth of the American and the euphoric adrenaline running wildly through him.

Heero couldn't tear his attention away from the angel he held--the scent of raspberries and roses enveloped the young pilot, and he drifted off to sleep.....

"Morning, sunshine!" Quatre shook Duo and Heero awake early the next morning. "Are you two going to sleep away the new year?"

Heero groggily came to to find himself still seated on the couch in Duo's living room, holding the American in his tired arms. Duo lifted his head. "Ohayo, Q-man."

"Good morning! Want something to eat?" Quatre smiled knowingly at the two.

Duo seemed to realize where he was, and hopped, blushing red, off Heero onto the floor. "Uh, gomen nasai....Heero...."

"Aa?" Heero blinked sleepily.

Duo gritted his teeth and made a hasty exit.

Still a little confused, Heero picked himself up off the couch and followed Quatre downstairs. The remaining guests were already eating, and Duo was helping himself to a large stack of pancakes.

"Headache..." Wufei groaned. Sally admonished, "You shouldn't have overdone it! What were were you thinking, drinking all that wine!?"

"Hey, Heero." Catherine greeted him as he entered. "Hungover?"

"Not really." Heero removed a plate from the cupboard and heaped it with pancakes before taking a seat between Duo and Quatre. Duo stared at his food, not meeting Heero's eyes.

"Soooo...." Sally looked back and forth between the two pilots. "You two looked pretty cozy last night, eh?"

Duo turned a bright crimson. "Shit..."

Heero gave her his best Death Glare, which shut the woman up. Duo rose from the table and left the kitchen, offering apologies to Quatre. Heero jumped up and followed him into the hallway.

"Sorry." Duo mumbled.

"For what?" Heero inquired.

The American blushed even redder, if that was possible. "For, uh, making you look...like that...in front of the others."

Heero stared hard at Duo's sheepish face. "Duo...."

Duo bit his lip. "I mean, we were drunk, and...I don't want you to, I don't know...stay away from me, or whatever...do you even remember anything from last night?"

Heero nodded curtly.

"Aw, shit...I'm sorry, Heero. You don't...hate me, or anything, do you?"

Heero narrowed his eyes. "You weren't just saying it because you were drunk?"

"No! I mean, yes, I mean....oh God....no....I was....serious."

"Why would you think I hate you?"

"I don't know...you...said things, to me, and held me and..." Duo broke off abruptly and stared at the floor.

Heero tipped up the American's chin and looked intently into his eyes. "Duo, how much do you suppose I had to drink last night?"

"Ano...a little wine, whatever was in that coke, uh, the champagne...I don't know....how much did you have?"

Heero offered Duo a small smile. "Not a drop."

"What!?" Duo sputtered. "But you didn't--you weren't--what!?"

"I meant every word of what I said last night, Duo." He leaned in and kissed Duo again, despite the look of shock in his indigo eyes. "I wanted to tell you for a long time."

"...Really?" Duo whispered. "Heero...."

"Duo."

"Nani?"

"Happy new year."

"You too, Heero."

They shared another kiss.

"Heero?"

"Hn?"

"I wonder...what you'd be like if you really were drunk."

"Saa, Duo...it's so much easier to remember when I'm sober...and I want to remember every single moment."

"Hn."

And they did.
