Star Crossed, Forever Lost
~By Shimegami-chan
Part 2
Shounen-ai, and some weird stuff...but not yet.
When Seki next awoke she was in a hospital bed, staring at a white ceiling. She
sucked in a gasp and sat straight up.
Immediately a nurse rushed to her side. "Oh my! Please don't move!"
Seki tried her best to breathe normally, but her lungs were rasping.
"What...how..."
The nurse placed her hands on Seki's shoulders and gently forced her to lay
back on the bed. "Shh... don't try to speak, Miss Tezuka..."
"How do you know me? Where am I?" Seki eventually managed to choke
out. "What happened?"
"You were in an accident, my dear. A shuttle crash...everyone else.... didn't
make it." the nurse informed her sombrely.
"What?! But how?!" Seki couldn't believe what she was hearing.
"Two survivors, out of the 40 on the shuttle." the nurse clucked her
tongue disapprovingly. "You were pinned down by the seat in front of
you--it was reclined, even though it shouldn't have been. But that was all that
saved your life."
"Two?" Seki's green eyes had finally cleared enough to stare at the
other woman.
"Two, but the other young lady hasn't been identified. She wasn't carrying
any information, and received a sharp blow to the head during the crash. She's
conscious now, but can't remember who she is or where she came from. So
young." The elderly nurse sighed heavily. "I don't know if you know
her...but she pulled you from the wreck and got the both of you fairly far away
before passing out. Commendable, and brave."
"Mayumi? Was it Mayumi?" Seki coughed again and sat up. "God,
where is she?"
"You know her, then?" The nurse gave her a hassled look. "She
has no ID cards on her at all. Was she travelling with you?"
"No, I met her on the shuttle. I was travelling alone. But she told me a
bit about herself."
The nurse nodded sympathetically. "I'll have her moved into this room as
soon as she's finished being checked over. I'm Nurse Misako, by the way."
"Uh, thank you." Seki glanced around the room and for the first time
took in her surroundings. The room was bare and painted white, Seki was still
fully clothed and none of her jewellery was missing. Her purse was lying on a
table beside her, ID cards stacked neatly beside it. How long had she been in
the hospital?
"Am I okay?" Seki asked worriedly.
"Physically, yes. You came out of the crash practically unscathed, but we
still need to check you over more thoroughly, and make sure that there hasn't
been an emotional impact left on you."
"What about Mayumi?"
"The other young lady? It depends on whether her memory comes back any
time soon. As I said, we don't know anything about her. If you could provide
any information to help us locate her family, we'd be very appreciative."
"Um." Seki pondered for a moment. "Let's see...her name is
Mayumi Maxwell--if it is Yumi, that is. When can I see her?"
"I'll bring her in as soon as possible for you to verify her
identity," Misako promised. "Go on."
"She's from L2...I think she said she was American, but adopted. She's a
pilot. Oh! And she was coming back from visiting a friend on L4, but I don't
know who is was. So maybe you might be able to find them ne?"
"Thanks a lot." Nurse Misako stood and smiled warmly at Seki.
"I'll send someone in to check you over--you shouldn't need to stay here
very long. Not a very good homecoming, is it?"
"No," Seki laughed. "Not at all."
A crashing sound echoed from down the hall and many sets of footsteps could be
heard running in the hall. A blur of chestnut shot past the open door to Seki's
room.
"Mayumi?" Seki called, jumping out of bed. Misako began to protest,
but Seki was out of the room before she could say a word.
Seki turned right and spied the black shadow about fifteen feet down the
endless hall. Close behind the Canadian woman came three men and two women in
white coats, protesting to the escaped patient to stop. Yumi did indeed ground
to a halt when the long hallway came to a dead end. Seki arrived at her side a
few seconds later as Mayumi backed herself into the corner, fists clenched and
teeth gritted, ready to personally take down anyone who approached her.
"Mayumi?" Seki asked softly, reaching a hand out to the shaking girl.
Shock registered in her violet eyes. "Is that me? You're the woman who sat
beside me. The other survivor."
"Shiseki, remember? I met you on the plane." The doctors clattered up
behind Seki and tried to push her away, but Yumi would have none of that.
"Don't touch her," she hissed, bringing her fists close to her body.
The nervous-looking doctors back off.
"So, you remember me?" Yumi laughed bitterly. "I don't remember
you."
"That's all right." Seki gave the other woman a comforting smile.
"They told me that you'd lost your memory."
"Mayumi..." the American said softly, looking down at her hands. They
were pale and trembling, slim fingers with short nails. "Yumi?"
"Mayumi Maxwell," Seki replied. "You're a pilot, from L2, that's
about all I know. I'm sorry."
"It's not your fault," she whispered.
One of the doctors intervened. "If you have some information we should
know, I suggest you assist us in bringing her back to her room."
"No... that's wrong..." Yumi breathed.
"Are you okay?" Seki asked worriedly. To the doctors, she said,
"What were you doing to her?"
"Nothing," assured a young male doctor with blonde hair. "She's
going to be staying a while, so we gave her some fresh clothes and asked her to
get changed. When we came back in, though, she was still wearing her old ones
and refused to put on anything but. The female nurses were going to dress her,
but she ran away."
"Don't touch me," Mayumi said coldly.
"It's regulations," said another doctor, a female.
"I don't care. I'm not doing it." Yumi hugged her arms tight around
her body.
"Why?" questioned the first man.
"It's a personal problem, okay?!" the American barked. "I can't
even remember what it is. But I can't let you touch me."
"Let her be," suggested Misako quietly. "You're certainly not
doing her memory any good pressuring her this way."
"She's right," Seki agreed. "Leave it."
Mayumi gave Seki a grateful smile. "Arigatou, Seki-chan."
"Now that we know a little about her," Nurse Misako said with
finality, "I suggest we move Miss Maxwell into the room with Miss Tezuka
here."
The five doctors and nurses could only stare as Misako took Seki and Yumi by
the wrists and gently led them back down the hall. "I'll take care of them
from here on in."
