Digimon isn't mine. Neither is the song. (It's BNL.)

~the old apartment~ by shimegami

-----

[Scene opens with Daisuke holding a crowbar, prying open a deadbolt. A hesitant Ken stands behind him, watching people walk down the street. Another tenant enters an apartment a few doors down, and waves at the boys. Daisuke cheerfully waves back.]

Broke into the old apartment
This is where we used to live
Broken glass, broke and hungry
Broken hearts and broken bones
This is where we used to live

[The boys enter the porch, closing the door behind them.]

Why did you paint the walls?

[Ken runs his fingers over the moulding on the wall]

Why did you clean the floor?

[Daisuke's boots make black scuffs on the linoleum]

Why did you plaster over the hole I punched in the door?

[An irate Daisuke recalls a memory of Ken removing dozens of splinters from his hand.]

This is where we used to live

[The two young men walk through the kitchen, where Daisuke steps on a mousetrap. Ken peers at a sinkful of dirty dishes.]

Why did you keep the mousetrap?
Why did you keep the dishrack?

[Daisuke picks up the unset trap and stuffs it in his jacket pocket.]

These things used to be mine
I guess they still are, I want 'em back

[Ken remembers a scene where he and Daisuke picnicked on the roof. Daisuke remembers one where he fell out the window and landed on an awning.]

Broke into the old apartment
Forty-two stairs from the street

[Flashback: A younger Daisuke argues with a battleaxe of a woman, who insists that he pay for the ripped awning.]

Crooked landing, crooked landlord
Narrow laneway filled with crooks

[Flashback: Teenage Daisuke is mugged in an alleyway and his basket of laundry stolen. Ken arrives to help.]

This is where we used to live

[The crooks lay in a heap in the darkness, felled by Ken's judo skills.]

Why did they pave the lawn?
Why did they change the locks?

[Flashback: Ken patiently tries the doorknob, while Daisuke tries the keys he should have given back. When the keys don't function, however, he produces a crowbar, and the opening scene begins again.]

Why did I have to break in, I only came here to talk
This is where we used to live

[Cut to a scene with adult Daisuke and Ken jumping on the new tenant's bed.]

How is the neighbor downstairs?
How is her temper this year?

[Ken raids the refrigerator while Daisuke breakdances in the living room.]

I turned up your TV and stomped on the floor just for fun
I know we don't live here anymore

[Flashback: Teenage Ken and Daisuke unpacking boxes, while Chibimon and Wormmon throw newspaper padding everywhere.]

We bought an old house on the Danforth
He loves me and his body keeps me warm

[Flashback: Teenage Daisuke and Ken in bed together, boxes stacked all over the room. Ken is sleeping, however, Daisuke looks troubled.]

I'm happy there

[Adult Daisuke checks out an arsenal of lockpicks, Silly String, copied keys and the trusty crowbar.]

But this is where we used to live

[As a mollified Ken watches, Daisuke detroys the kitchen of the old apartment, throwing broken dishes everywhere. Tears are streaming from his eyes.]

Broke into the old apartment
Tore the phone out of the wall

[The two boys stand amid the destruction. Ken silently urges Daisuke to follow him out of the room, but Daisuke will not budge. A tangle of telephone wires and broken dishes lie at his feet.]

Only memories, fading memories

[Daisuke drops the keyring and Ken gathers him into his arms.]

Blending into dull tableaux

[Scene fades to black as the keys silently hit the floor.]

I want them back...
