My Theories
My theories as to why Neji acts and thinks like he does. Since he's a side char, and shows up for a whopping ten chapters in the manga maybe, a great deal of his character and life is left to insight. So, playtime for me! :3

Theory One: The Hyuuga Hatred
The Hyuuga's destiny of hatred, Neji calls it. Basically, it's the grudge all branch members hold against the main family. Neji, being so close yet so far from the main family, is especially affected. His father's death, Neji first believes, was the result of saving Hiashi. "I've only shown Neji my ugly side", claimed Hizashi before he died. Hizashi only allowed Neji to see his grudge against the main family, despite the fact that he still cared for his brother. His reason for doing this is not revealed in the manga, but I believe he did it in hopes of Neji gaining the strength to change his fate. This, however, sort of does the opposite; Neji becomes very fatalistic, a real "your future was preordained" type of thing. He hates the main family for controlling the branches, and for not giving him a chance to prove his worth. He takes this so far as to try to kill Hinata in the chuunin final exam preliminaries, as a "fight against destiny". He tells Naruto during the final exam of the curse seal and the hatred, and starts blabbing his fatalistic ideals at Naruto, who in true Naruto fashion, is not impressed, and finally knocks some sense into our dear Neji. Later, the head of the main family comes to Neji and explains the true reason behind his father's death, which results in a somewhat sad scene, then Neji gains hope in the future once again. Awww...how sweet.
